3 Reason You Should Go Electric--Toothbrush That Is!

Cars aren't the only things going electric these days--in fact, electric toothbrushes have been around for even longer.

Yet so many people continue to use a manual toothbrush. While a manual toothbrush can certainly get the job done, there are a few reasons to consider going electric.

The round-motion sweep of an electric toothbrush head is much more effective for cleaning your teeth and sweeping plaque or bacteria away. It's nearly impossible to recreate this quick, precise motion exactly with a manual brush.
More so, this specific rotation is better at protecting your gum line from inflammation, meaning less recession and healthy, longer lasting teeth and gums.
Lastly, manual toothbrushes don't include a timer. Electric toothbrushes will continue moving in your mouth for two minutes every time you use them, making sure you brush for the proper amount of time. Your teeth will certainly thank you!

Everything You Should Know About Halloween Candy and Your Teeth

It’s that time of year again—and while things may look a little different this Halloween as we settle into pandemic life, we know that you and your children are likely looking forward to celebrating the upcoming holiday.

Hey, we get it! While we can’t recommend you over-indulge in candy, we know you might dabble in a treat or two, so we wanted to give you some sweet-tips to keep in mind.

1. Certain candies are worse for your teeth than others. Candies that ‘linger’ like gummy or sticky treats can increase your chance of developing a cavity. Gummy worms are among the worst offenders, being highly acidic as well full of sugar and sticky.

2. If you’re going to indulge, brush your teeth after eating a sweet. The longer that sugar bacteria stays on your teeth, the more of a chance it has to break down enamel. To ensure your kids brush on Halloween night, try gifting them a new toothbrush as a part of the Halloween celebration so they’re excited to use it that evening.

3. If you’re looking for a sweet but ‘healthier’ treat to pass out to trick-or-treaters this year, go for small, individual sized bags of trail-mix. Generally, trail mix contains a variety of nuts as well as dried fruit or even pieces of candy. The nuts in trail-mix are rich in fiber, but also help to get rid of left-behind debris in the mouth while eating.

Grind Your Teeth? Here’s 5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About the Habit

If you’ve come to us for a dental checkup before, you may have heard us tell you that some of your teeth show signs of clenching or grinding. While stress is a common culprit—it’s not the only one.

Here are five other things you may not have known about teeth grinding, and what you can do to stop it!

1. Teeth grinding has a fancy name—‘bruxism.’ You can experience bruxism while you’re awake unknowingly, or while you sleep at night (nighttime bruxism).

2. There are several signs of teeth grinding that aren’t always that obvious—do any of these sound familiar to you? If so, you might be grinding your teeth without thinking twice about it.

· Waking up with headaches

· Jaw soreness

· Tightness or pain in facial muscles

· Fatigue or tiredness due to lack of sleep

3. While grinding your teeth may not sound incredibly serious, it can lead to long term (costly) issues and more, including broken or chipped teeth, worn and cracked enamel, gum recession and even loss of teeth.

4. Bruxism has several causes, including stress, anxiety, alcohol consumption, smoking, sleep apnea, snoring, abnormal bite and crooked teeth.

5. There are successful treatments for grinding your teeth—like having a custom-made bite guard fitted for you at our practice. These guards are durable, long-lasting and may be covered by your insurance—not to mention, because their custom formed to your mouth, they’re much more comfortable than ones you might purchase over-the-counter. At your visit, we’ll take 3D scans of your teeth and bite, which will then be sent to a lab to fabricate a hard or soft night-guard. Then, you’ll return to try it on and make sure it fits perfectly. It’s that simple!

Are Your Teeth Looking “Longer” Than Usual?

Picture this: You’ve just woken up in the morning, and you head to the bathroom to brush your teeth. After giving yourself a quick smile in the mirror before starting your day, you notice something unusual—your teeth look ‘longer’ than they used to.

So, what gives?

The problem likely isn’t with your teeth—but your gums. Your teeth didn’t magically grow overnight, but with time and poor oral health care, your gums can recede, exposing more of your tooth and causing it/them to appear longer.

In addition to teeth looking longer than usual, other signs of gum recession include:

· Swollen, bright colored gums

· Bleeding gums

· Visible tooth root

Gum Recession and Periodontal Disease

Severe gum recession can lead to something known as periodontal disease, which is caused by a buildup of plaque that leads to inflammation and bleeding gums. As this happens, deep gum pockets form and bacteria gets trapped—making it very hard to clean with a regular toothbrush. Then the cycle continues—the trapped bacteria causes even more problems with your gums, like recession.

Patients who use tobacco, have diabetes and those who don’t brush and floss each day are at a higher risk for developing periodontal disease.

The best way to fight gum recession and periodontal disease? Keeping a regular visit schedule with us that includes a cleaning every six months and booking a visit as soon as you sense something isn’t right with your oral health. That way, we can stop periodontal disease in its tracks, before it becomes a more serious (and costly!) problem for you.

A treatment known as scaling and root planing (essentially, a “deep clean”) is often recommended for mild to moderate cases of periodontal disease. For more severe cases, gum graft surgery may be required—if your gums continue to recede, you risk losing your teeth as they help to keep them solid and in place!

In light of Covid-19 and in an effort to bring our patients the best possible care, we're excited to announce that we've purchased a new air purifying unit for the practice! This means that when you visit us, you'll be breathing clean, purified air that uses a six-stage filtration process.

So, How Does it Work?

Our new air purifying unit is designed to decrease pollutants, odors, gasses, disinfectants, molds, viruses and fungus that can disturb the air. In six steps, the unit can accomplish:

Ridding the air of dust and other particles through its anti-microbial filter
Utilizing static electricity to rid the air of larger bacteria and smog
Ridding the air of chemicals and odors through an activated carbon filter
UV light operations destroy viruses, bacteria, mold and other allergens
Organic chemicals are removed through the use of titanium during oxidizing
The hydroxyl radical reactivity chamber utilizes negative ions to revitalize and reenergize the air before it's pumped back through the practice.
